Eating Peanut Butter Cookies, Trying To Think of What to Write
My wife made Peanut Butter cookies last night and, like the weak-willed bastard I am, I’m munching on them, getting crumbs on my keyboard as I try to think of what to write here. I think there are too many commas in that sentence. One day, I’ll figure out how they work. Commas, I mean. Not Peanut Butter cookies. Those things just go in your mouth and you chew and swallow. It’s pretty easy.
I’m in a weird spot with work right now. I’ve managed to eke out a couple of weeks with no work-for-hire gigs, so that I can dedicate all of my focus to building creator-owned work. None of it has a home or artist attached, nor is any of it in a state where it’s ready to pitch. Mostly, at this point, I’m doing research reading and taking the time to soak in these worlds I’m trying to build.
Some of these projects are books that I’ve been wanting to do for nearly a decade. One of them had previously been picked up by a publisher, but I’d taken it back from the them because I needed a guarantee that some of my, admittedly over-ambitious, plans could be met and they weren’t able to promise anything beyond five issues. That’s not a knock against the publisher, business is what it is. But, this project has a very specific trajectory and scope and I’d rather sit on it until I can do it properly rather than risk having it cut short.
That said, there’s a glimmer of hope that I may be able to bring this project to life and so I’m making the time to make sure that we can do the project the justice it deserves.
How’s that for being super vague about things? Kinda bullshit, eh? Sorry.
All I can really say at this point is that his project marries my love of comic books, trash cinema and crime.
Here’s the research pile so far (more books on the way):
DCAF 2021!
On August 15th, I’ll be venturing out of the dungeons to attend my first convention since March 2020. Though, I’m not venturing too far, as the convention is only a 10 minute drive.
For those unfamiliar, DCAF is an annual, free comic show that takes place in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. You can find all the juicy details here.
I don’t have details on other guests just yet, though keep an eye on the DCAF site for that.
I will be bringing along stacks of trades and single issues. I’ll try to have a nice variety for everyone. If you’re going to be there and there’s something specific you’re after, drop a note (just respond to this email) to let me know and I’ll do my best to accommodate.
Since we’re not fully out of the pandemic, masks will be mandatory and I won’t be doing any handshaking. I will be signing books at no charge
I haven’t confirmed any other shows going forward, so am not sure of where I’ll be popping up next. I’m keeping US shows off the table until travel is safer, but with any luck, I’ll be attending one or two by the end of the year.
